ADVANCED CLINICAL TRAINING PROGRAM

Showa University Koto Toyosu Hospital Digestive Diseases Center provides advanced clinical training to international doctors. “Advanced Clinical Training” is a system accredited by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare under the Japanese law which grants an international doctor a temporary medical license to perform clinical procedures in accredited institutions during the period of their training. International doctors who were granted the temporary medical license in our hospital have performed approximately 20 POEM procedures during their one-year stay.

Training Program:
  • Join conferences, patients’ rounds
  • Learn endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of GI diseases, peri- and postoperative management
  • Learn about novel advanced endoscopic techniques such as anti-reflux mucosal ablation (ARMA), POEM + fundoplication (POEM+F), endoscopic subserosal dissection (ESSD), per-oral endoscopic tumor resection (POET), etc.
  • Perform POEM (if granted with temporary medical license)

APPLICATION

To apply for (A) or (B), you need to satisfy the university’s criteria as follows:
  • You have graduated from a university or you are considered to have the same level of medical education.
  • You are currently working at a university / hospital /medical institution.

**Please note that the Advanced Clinical Training Program is only available to medical professionals who have at least 3 years of clinical experience. In addition, the application process generally takes a couple of months and application must be done after the person’s arrival to Japan.**

(A) International Fellow with scholarship

Training period: 12 months (generally April 1 to March 31 of the following year)
Submission deadline: End of August of the previous year of your visit
Visa assistance: For stays of more than 3 months, the university will provide you a Certificate of Eligibility (once accepted to the program) to apply for a visa in your home country.

Required Documents
The following documents must be submitted electronically:
  1. Completed Application Form
  2. Official Letter of Recommendation with letterhead from your current supervisor
  3. Curriculum Vitae with your photo and major (please state if Surgery or Internal Medicine)
  4. Copy of Medical License (in English or translated)
  5. Copy of Diploma or graduation certificate from university (in English or translated)
  6. A high-resolution photo (JPEG format, larger than 600×600 pixels at 300 dpi, full face, without headwear (unless for religious purposes), taken during the last 3 months)
  7. Copy of certificate that proves English ability (TOEFL or IELTS) **except for native English speakers
  8. Essay that describes the motive of your application and the plan of your study (Free style, no character limit)
  9. Copy of the photo page of passport
  10. If your stay has been approved, please provide authorized immunization records (measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, influenza), negative tuberculosis results in chest x-ray taken within 1 year before arrival
To apply for the temporary medical license, you also need to provide:

11. Documentation or certification proving that you have at least 3 years of clinical experience (in English or translated)

You can also apply for:
University dormitory (depending on room availability)
  • Rent: Free (except for utilities expenses)
  • Location: Hatanodai, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo (about one-hour train commute to Toyosu)
  • Room: a shared room for two people
Scholarship from Showa University
  • 100,000 yen (approximately 800USD)/month
  • You need to study for more than 3 months to be eligible for application
  • Maximum benefit period is one year
  • If you are going to receive financial support from the government or other organizations at the same time, you cannot apply for this scholarship.

Upon completion of your training, an official certificate of training will be issued by Showa University.

(B) International Fellow without scholarship

Training period: 4 to 12 months (generally April 1 to March 31 of the following year)
Submission deadline: End of August of the previous year of your visit
Visa assistance: For stays of more than 3 months, the university will provide you a Certificate of Eligibility (once accepted to the program) to apply for a visa in your home country.

The following documents must be submitted electronically:

(C) Observer/Visitor

Period: Maximum of 90 days
Submission deadline: 3 months prior to your visit
Visa assistance: For visa, you need to obtain it by yourself. We can offer some assistance by issuing an acceptance letter after your application is approved by the university faculty.

  1. Curriculum Vitae with your photo and major (please state if Surgery or Internal Medicine)
  2. Copy of Medical License (in English or translated)
  3. Brief description of the purpose of your visit, length of intended stay and the plan of your study (Free style, no character limit)
  4. Copy of the photo page of passport

Please take note that there is a fee of ¥10,000 (approximately 100USD) if you wish to receive an Observership Certificate of Attendance.
